Information On Erectile Dysfunction Medicines

Man tips pills into his hand

Erectile dysfunction affects millions of men worldwide. Indeed it is estimated that most men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction (ED) over the course of their lifteime. Fortunately, a wide range of erectile dysfunction drugs are available to help men beat the condition. Each drug has its own advantages and certain ED drugs work better for certain individuals. Here we examine four leading erectile dysfunction  drugs - Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis, Levitra, and Spedra - and provide the key information on each.

Appearance: Small blue pill

Active ingredient: Sildenafil

What's the deal? Viagra is the most famous of all erectile dysfunction drugs. Developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer in the late 1990s, Viagra pioneered the vast ED market that exists today.

Time to take effect: 30-60 minutes

Duration of effect: 4-6 hours

Recommended because: Viagra has proven brand-quality, and is the most commonly used ED treatment worldwide.

Bear in mind: Viagra no longer monopolises the ED market. Cialis offers a longer duration, Spedra acts faster, and sildenafil is essentially the same drug only cheaper.

Our doctors say: "Viagra has helped millions of men gain and maintain a long-lasting erection."

Appearance: Almond-shaped yellow pill

Active ingredient: Tadalafil

What's the deal? Tadalafil was approved for ED treatment in 2003. Sold under the brand name 'Cialis', the drug offers a uniquely long-lasting effect.

Time to take effect: 15-60 minutes

Duration of effect: Up to 36 hours

Recommended because: Cialis has the longest duration of action of all ED drugs

Bear in mind: Such duration comes at a price: Cialis is also the most expensive

Our doctors say: "Cialis is a good choice for men seeking a long-lasting erectile dysfunction treatment."

Appearance: Round orange pill

Active ingredient: Vardenafil

What's the deal? Levitra was patent approved in 2003, just like its rival Cialis. Manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Levitra was produced as an alternative to Viagra.

Time to take effect: 30-60 minutes

Duration of effect: 4-6 hours

Recommended because: Levitra can be taken with food, and is often recommended for diabetics.

Bear in mind: Levitra is quite pricey, and lacks the obvious unique selling point of say, Cialis or Spedra.

Our doctors say: "Levitra is a reliable ED treatment that can be taken with food, unlike Viagra."

Appearance: Small tablet, either white or blue

Active ingredient: Sildenafil citrate

What's the deal? Sildenafil is Viagra, only chepaer. After Viagra's patent expired in 2013, companies can now selll its active ingredient at a much lower price.

Time to take effect: 30-60 minutes

Duration of effect: 4-6 hours

Recommended because: You get the same drug as Viagra, only at a much lower cost.

Bear in mind: Although the two contain the same active ingredient, some men experience better results with Viagra than with sildenafil, due to Viagra's renowned brand name.

Our doctors say: "Sildenafil has the same active ingredient as Viagra, and has helped millions of men."

Appearance: Pale yellow, oval pill

Active ingredient: Avanafil

What's the deal? Spedra only launched in 2014. As the brand name suggests, Spedra is the fastest acting of all ED drugs.

Time to take effect: 15 minutes

Duration of effect: 4-6 hours

Recommended because: Spedra is the perfect drug for those in a hurry.

Bear in mind: Only recently marketed, less is known about Spedra than its rival treatments.

Our doctors say: "Spedra can work faster than Viagra, in fact some men feel the effect within 15 minutes."
