What our patients say

What does the women’s hormones blood test show?

    On this page

    Oestrogen

Oestrogen is the main female sex hormone. It is needed for the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, healthy bones, and more. The blood test checks for the levels of oestradiol (the strongest of three oestrogens) in the blood. If you have too much or not enough oestradiol, you may experience irregular periods, hot flushes, depression and anxiety, a low sex drive, and sleep problems.

    Luteinising hormone (LH)

Luteinising hormone (LH) is important in fertility and triggers ovulation. If LH levels are imbalanced, you may have irregular periods and trouble getting pregnant.

    Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is also important in fertility. It is important in the production of eggs by the ovaries and for ovulation. High FSH levels can be a sign of the menopause. If levels are too high or too low, you may have trouble getting pregnant.

Testosterone – including free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and free androgen index (FAI)

Testosterone is essential for healthy muscles and bones, sex drive, mood, and clear thinking. Levels naturally decline as we age, but if you are outside the normal range, you might feel tired, have low moods and a low sex drive.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBH) controls the amount of testosterone your body can use, and free androgen index (FAI) is a ratio worked out to see if your levels of sex hormones are in the normal range.

    Prolactin

Prolactin is responsible for lactation (making and secreting breast milk), and the development of breast tissue. Too much prolactin can cause irregular periods and a low sex drive.

Thyroid function – thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free T4 (FT4)

If your thyroid is overactive or underactive, hormonal imbalances can cause symptoms such as weight changes, sleep problems, anxiety and depression, and tiredness. The blood test checks thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free T4 (FT4). TSH is responsible for telling your thyroid the amount of hormone it needs to make. FT4 is the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

      Frequently asked questions

      On this page

Can I do this test to understand my fertility?

If you’re thinking about family planning now or in the future, this blood test can give you insights into your fertility. It may show if you have a condition that may affect your fertility. However, it won’t tell you how likely you are to get pregnant or if you’re infertile.

Can the test tell me if I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

The women’s hormones blood test checks for hormonal imbalances which may indicate PCOS if you also have any of the following:

      • Irregular periods
      • Acne
      • Difficulty getting pregnant
      • Excess body hair (hirsutism)
      • Weight gain

If we suspect that you may have PCOS, we’d recommend speaking to your GP for further support.

When should I do this test?

The test should be done on the third day of your period. Day one is the first day of bleeding.

If your periods are irregular, we recommend that you wait until you get a period to do the test. This way, your results will be more useful.

If you do not get periods, you can still do the test, but it could be more difficult for our team to interpret your results.

Can I do the test if I'm taking HRT?

Yes, if you're taking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) you can use the women's hormone blood test. It can be used to monitor your hormone levels while using HRT.  You’ll need to ask the person prescribing your HRT if a blood test would be helpful.

Please bear in mind this test is not intended to diagnose the menopause

What will my results tell me?

Your results will tell you what your biomarker levels are and how they compare to the healthy ranges.

If you have any abnormal results one of our clinicians will contact you with more information.

How will I get my results?

We’ll send you an email or a text to let you know when the lab has received your samples.

Results are usually ready in 3 working days of receipt of samples — we’ll let you know when you can view them in your dashboard.

How do I see my results?

If ready, your results will be in the results portal. If you've already created an account, please login to view them now.

The results portal requires a different login to your LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor account. To create your results portal account, please refer to the email sent to you when you placed your order.
