The medicine
Malarone is a medicine that helps prevent and treat malaria. It contains two active ingredients - Atovaquone and Proguanil hydrochloride.
Taking Malarone

Take Malarone at the same time each day with food or a milky drink.

You need to start taking the tablets one to two days before visiting a malaria area and keep taking the tablets for a week after you leave.
How it works
Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito passes the malaria into your bloodstream, infecting you. Malarone prevents malaria by killing this parasite.
How quickly it works
You'll be protected one to two days after starting your course – so you need to start taking the medicine before you leave. This means you'll be protected by the time you arrive at your destination.

For Malarone to be fully effective it should be taken once a day and according to the instructions to give you maximum protection.

Remember, the best protection against malaria is avoiding being bitten by a mosquito in the first place as, like all malaria tablets, Malarone gives you around 90% protection against the disease.
Side effects
Side effects from Malarone are uncommon and usually mild, but the medicine can sometimes cause stomach pain, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, coughing or mouth ulcers. You may experience vivid dreams.
Alternative treatments Not all malaria prevention drugs are suitable for all parts of the world. You should check which tablets are recommended for your destination. Just choose one of the suitable alternatives. These can include Lariam and Doxycycline, which are also available from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.
