If you choose same day Click & Collect, call the pharmacy to check everything is ready, then collect your medicine.
If you choose mail-order delivery, make sure someone can sign for your postal delivery.

The medicine
Malarone is a medicine that helps prevent and treat malaria. It contains two active ingredients - Atovaquone and Proguanil hydrochloride.
Taking Malarone

Take Malarone at the same time each day with food or a milky drink.

You need to start taking the tablets one to two days before visiting a malaria area and keep taking the tablets for a week after you leave.
How it works
Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito passes the malaria into your bloodstream, infecting you. Malarone prevents malaria by killing this parasite.
How quickly it works
You'll be protected one to two days after starting your course – so you need to start taking the medicine before you leave. This means you'll be protected by the time you arrive at your destination.
Effectiveness

For Malarone to be fully effective it should be taken once a day and according to the instructions to give you maximum protection.

Remember, the best protection against malaria is avoiding being bitten by a mosquito in the first place as, like all malaria tablets, Malarone gives you around 90% protection against the disease.
Side effects
Side effects from Malarone are uncommon and usually mild, but the medicine can sometimes cause stomach pain, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, coughing or mouth ulcers. You may experience vivid dreams.
Alternative treatments Not all malaria prevention drugs are suitable for all parts of the world. You should check which tablets are recommended for your destination. Just choose one of the suitable alternatives. These can include Lariam and Doxycycline, which are also available from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.

Doxycycline is a medicine that helps prevent and treat malaria. The active ingredient is Doxycycline hyclate.
Taking Doxycycline

Take Doxycycline at the same time each day with a large glass of water.

You need to start taking the tablets 2 days before visiting a malaria area and keep taking the tablets for 4 weeks after you leave.
How it works
Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito passes the malaria into your bloodstream, infecting you. Malarone prevents malaria by killing this parasite.
How quickly it works
You'll be protected as quickly as one to two days after starting your course – so you need to start treatment before you leave. This means you'll be protected by the time you arrive at your destination.
Effectiveness

You need to take your tablets regularly and according to the instructions to get maximum protection.

Remember, while Doxycycline gives you around 90% protection, making sure you don't get bitten by a mosquito is really important too.
Side effects

Side effects from Doxycycline are uncommon but it can cause nausea, diarrhoea and a sore throat in some people. Rarer side effects include inflammation of the liver or bowel. It can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

You shouldn’t get pregnant while taking this medicine as it may damage a growing foetus.

Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito passes the malaria parasite into your bloodstream, infecting you. Lariam helps prevent and treat malaria by attacking the parasites in the red blood cells of the body and stopping them from multiplying further.
How quickly it works
You need to start treatment 2.5 weeks before you leave. This means you'll be protected by the time you arrive at your destination.
Effectiveness

For the best protection against malaria using Lariam you should take it according to the instructions and regularly to the end of the course. It offers you around 90% protection against the disease.

As with all malaria tablets, you should try to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, as this will give you the best protection.
Sideeffects

Lariam can cause nausea, vomiting, depression, mood changes, anxiety, confusion, panic attacks or a general feeling of agitation. The side effects can last a number of weeks.

It's best not to take Lariam if you're trying to get pregnant or might become pregnant when taking the medicine or within 3 months of stopping it.

It can also cause dizziness or disturbed sense of balance so be aware of this if you intend to drive, dive, pilot aircraft or operate machines.
