About Rizatriptan

The medicineRizatriptan 5mg / 10mg & Rizatriptan lyophilisate (Maxalt Melt) 10mg
Taking Rizatriptan

Take one tablet with water or fizzy water at when your migraine headache begins. Taking this treatment with a fizzy water can help it to work faster.

Rizatriptan lyophilisate (Maxalt Melt) melts in the mouth so does not need to be taken with water.
How it worksRizatriptan works by reversing the chemical changes in the brain that cause a migraine.
Side effects

Common side effects include:

  • Feeling drowsy or dizzy
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  • Numbness, tingling, or tremors
  • Flushing and sweating
  • Racing heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain or tightness in the throat or chest. If this is severe and does not pass quickly, please seek urgent medical help.

Rare, but serious side effects include: a slow heart-beat, seizures, visual disturbances, and severe allergic reactions.

Taking Rizatriptan

Rizatriptan is available as either a tablet, or a lyophilisate, that melts in the mouth. You should only take Rizatriptan once the headache phase of your migraine begins. If you experience an aura (warning symptoms that a migraine is about to begin) do not take your medication during this phase, as it may mean that it does not work.

If after two hours your migraine is not completely better, or has come back, you can take another tablet. Do not take more than 20mg Rizatriptan in 24 hours.

Do not take Rizatriptan with another triptan when treating the same migraine attack.

Rizatriptan should not be used on a daily basis, as this may lead to a medication overuse headache.

If your symptoms gets significantly worse or seem unusual, you should seek urgent medical care.
