What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?
What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?
ED is when a man is unable to get an erection or keep it long enough to have penetrative sex or masturbate. It can affect relationships and confidence.
Why do I have erectile dysfunction?
There are a lot of factors that cause erectile dysfunction – medical, physical, lifestyle choices, even emotional and psychological. Talking to your GP can help determine which applies to you.
Can erectile dysfunction be cured?
ED can be treated with a selection of different methods, from therapy to medical treatments. Talk to your GP to determine your best path forward.
How do erectile dysfunction treatments work?
Erectile dysfunction treatments work by increasing blood flow to the penis.
- During arousal the brain sends a signal to the penis to release a chemical, cGMP
- cGMP increases blood flow to the penis by relaxing muscle cell. This helps to cause an erection
- An enzyme called PDE-5 breaks down cGMP, causing erection loss (and lessening blood flow)
- ED treatments stop PDE-5 function, increasing blood flow to the penis.
How do ED treatment dosages work?
The higher the dosage of the tablet, the stronger the effect of the treatment. It won't work faster, or for longer. Any side effects you experience will be stronger as well. We usually advise you to choose a low dose if it's your first time taking that treatment.
What to expect when taking erectile dysfunction treatment for the first time
It can be nerve-wracking taking your first dose of an erectile dysfunction treatment. If you’re new to ED medication, remember the following:
- Don’t expect it to work instantly – most medications must be taken at least 30 minutes before arousal to take effect. However, different treatments have different time frames. Check how long you have to wait by reading the patient information for your treatment or looking at our comparison table in the ‘Which erectile dysfunction treatment is right for me?’ tab
- It may not work the first time – It may take several times on different occasions for your medication to take full effect. Do not take the medication more than once in 24 hours
- You may get side effects – ED treatment can cause several side effects, most commonly headaches. Check other possible side effects above and contact your GP if they’re affecting you
- Take the right dose – Your GP will prescribe the correct starting dose for you. Don’t take more than the recommended dosage
- Don’t pressure yourself – From performance anxiety to stress, psychological factors can impede sex and even become a cause of ED. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and focus on having a good time with your partner.
