Atovaquone with Proguanil

Atovaquone with Proguanil is the generic tablet form of Malarone and is therefore exactly the same but cheaper. It will provide you with protection against malaria when you visit countries in which the disease is widespread. It is very important that you check whether the country you are visiting is a malaria risk area, and get suitable tablets if it is.

Key Information

The medicine

Atovaquone with Proguanil (generic of Malarone) helps to prevent malaria. It contains two active ingredients - atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride.

How it works

You'll be protected as soon as malaria is spread to your bloodstream by the bite of an infected mosquito. Atovaquone with Proguanil prevents malaria by killing this parasite.

How quickly it works

You'll be protected 1-2 days after starting your course. You need to start taking the medicine before you arrive at the malaria risk area, so that you'll be protected by the time you get to your destination.

For Atovaquone with Proguanil to give you maximum protection, it should be taken once a day and according to the instructions in the medical leaflet. Like all malaria tablets, Atovaquone with Proguanil gives you around 90-100% protection against malaria when used in conjunction with other measures to make sure you don’t get bitten by a mosquito.

Side effects

Side effects from Atovaquone with Proguanil are uncommon and usually mild, but the medicine can sometimes cause stomach pain, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, coughing or mouth ulcers. You may experience vivid dreams.

Taking Atovaquone with Proguanil

Take Atovaquone with Proguanil at the same time each day with food or a milky drink.

You should start taking Atovaquone with Proguanil daily, 1 or 2 days before visiting a malaria risk area. You should continue to take it every day during your stay, and keep taking it every day for 7 days after you leave. If you order through our website, the pack you receive will contain all the tablets you need, including the ones to take before and after your trip.

Before you order please be aware that:

As well as taking malaria tablets, you must take other measures to protect yourself against malaria when in an at-risk area. As malaria is spread by mosquitoes, these measures involve avoiding being bitten by a mosquito in the first place. You should:

  • use insect repellent such as DEET
  • sleep under a mosquito net, preferably treated with insecticide
  • wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers in the evening
