Betnovate RD (Eczema)

Betnovate RD is a moderate steroid that helps treat eczema flare ups. Betnovate RD is a stronger steroid than hydrocortisone which means it should treat your eczema quicker but comes with a higher risk of side effects. Our doctors can prescribe Betnovate RD online for collection or delivery.

Key Information

The medicine

Betnovate RD is a moderately strong steroid which comes as either a cream or an ointment. Ointments are best if you have really dry skin.

Eczema skin care

Steroids are only a small part of the treatment needed for eczema. Using an emollient (unperfumed moisturiser) every day will protect and help reverse the damage that eczema can cause. Using a soap substitute when showering or bathing will also help protect the skin, as normal soap can be very drying. Aqueous cream or Dermol are good soap substitutes.

How quickly Betnovate RD works

You should notice an improvement in your eczema after a few days of treatment.

How to use it

Apply sparingly to the affected area of skin only, once a day. Use at this dose for a maximum of two weeks then reduce the amount you use over the next two weeks (for example use it once a day on alternate days) and then stop. You should not use Betnovate RD on your face. You should continue to use your emollients while using Betnovate RD. Apply a small amount of Betnovate RD (one fingertip unit should cover an area the size of two handprints. As an example, one 30g tube should be more than enough to treat eczema patches inside both elbows for two weeks). 20-30 minutes after applying Betnovate RD, apply a generous amount of emollient and rub it into your skin.

Side effects

Noticeable side effects are uncommon but can include a rash, a worsening of your eczema or burning of the skin. Please stop if any of these occur. If you use steroids on a continuous basis, irreversible damage to the skin may occur.

Alternative Treatments

Daily use of emollients is important. There are other prescription creams available depending upon the severity of your condition. You should see your GP about these alternatives. In a few patients, specific allergies can cause eczema to flare up.

We also offer hydrocortisone through our website, which is a weaker steroid cream or ointment for the treatment of eczema.
