How Healthy Is Your Heart?
Is your heart at risk?
Heart disease is one of the top killers in the UK and is the leading cause of death for men aged 50 and over. Since almost 1 in 5 men and 1 in 8 women in the UK die from heart disease, everybody should be aware of their heart’s health.
High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for developing heart disease, including coronary heart disease, blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. An estimated 7 million of us are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure without realising the risk we face.
Since you can’t feel when you have high blood pressure, the only way to know for certain is to have it measured.
Get your blood pressure checked
High blood pressure is when the pressure of blood in your arteries is consistently higher than the recommended level. Your heart will have to work harder to circulate blood, and your arteries can become damaged and hardened.
There are 3 main ways to get your blood pressure checked:
- Have your blood pressure checked at any LloydsPharmacy for free. Just drop by and ask one of our pharmacists for a free blood pressure check. Find your nearest LloydsPharmacy using our store locator.
- Book an appointment with your GP.
- With the help of a home blood pressure monitor you can measure your blood pressure more regularly, helping you to keep a consistent eye on your heart health. You should, however, always have it checked by a medical professional first.
A high blood pressure reading is one that is 140/90 or higher. See our article on high blood pressure for more detailed information.
