What are Foundayo tablets?

Foundayo tablets contain orforglipron. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have approved this medication for use in the UK to manage weight loss and help control type 2 diabetes.

How does Foundayo work?

Foundayo tablets contain the active ingredient, orforglipron. This is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, mimicking the glucagon-like peptide 1 hormone our bodies produce when we eat. The effects this hormone has on our bodies are:

Affecting blood sugar levels

Slowing digestion

Feeling fuller for longer, leading to a lower appetite

It is important Foundayo is not used alone, but used to support positive lifestyle modifications including a balanced reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How effective is Foundayo?

The ATTAIN-1 clinical trial (following 3127 adults with obesity) resulted in patients on 36 mg of orforglipron losing 12.4% of their body weight over 72 weeks compared to placebo. This treatment was given alongside several healthy lifestyle changes (like increased exercise and healthier diet) which would have also contributed.

Who can take Foundayo tablets?

Foundayo is a prescription-only medicine (POM). You can only be prescribed Foundayo if it has been considered an appropriate treatment for you by a clinician. Foundayo is not suitable for everyone.

According to the patient information leaflet, Foundayo should be used alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults with either:

A BMI of 30 kg/m² or greater

A BMI of at least 27 kg/m² but less than 30 kg/m² with at least one ‘weight related health problem) like high blood pressure or history of heart attack / stroke

Who can't take Foundayo tablets?

Do not take Foundayo if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning on having a baby as the effects of Foundayo on this aren’t known. If you have had a baby, it’s recommended that Foundayo is not used during breast feeding.

Orforglipron, the active ingredient in Foundayo, may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive pills. If you are taking these, it is recommended that you use a non-oral contraceptive method (i.e. condoms) for:

30 days after starting Foundayo

30 days after each increase in dose

How do you take Foundayo?

Foundayo should be taken once daily, at any time of day. It should be swallowed whole (there are no food or fluid restrictions while taking the tablet).

The starting dose of Foundayo is 0.8mg daily, which - if appropriate - may be increased after at least 30 days. This gradual increase reduces the chances of side effects.

For a list of the available dosages, see above.

If you forget to take Foundayo, take your dose as soon as you remember. Don’t take more than one dose a day or take a ‘double dose’ to make up for a lost dose.

Do not stop taking Foundayo without talking to your doctor.

Foundayo side effects

You may experience side effects while taking Foundayo (though some patients don’t get them).

For a full run down of side effects, consult section 4 of the Foundayo patient information leaflet.

Hypoglycaemia

Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) is a possible side effect of Orforglipron and can be more or less likely depending on additional medication you are taking.

Very common (can affect more than 1 in 10 people) – If used with insulin with or without metformin and/or sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors

Common (can affect more than 1 in 10 people) – If used with medicines that contain a sulfonylurea alone or combined with up to two additional diabetes medications for type 2 diabetes

Uncommon (can affect up to 1 in 100 people) – Used without insulin or sulfonylurea

Your doctor may change the dosage of your medicines before starting Foundayo.

Warning symptoms of hypoglycaemia include:

Cold sweat

Shaking

Difficulty concentrating

Cool pale skin

Fast heartbeat

Nausea (or hunger)

Changes in vision

Feeling sleepy or weak

Follow the treatment plan agreed with your diabetes care team if you start suffering from hypoglycaemia.

If you experience side effects, talk to a doctor, nurse, clinician or pharmacist. You can also report side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme (bear in mind reporting isn’t a replacement for seeking medical / emergency help).

If you need help due to side effects, call either 111 or 999 depending on the urgency:

111 if it is urgent but not life threatening

Message our clinicians through your account if you have routine questions about treatment (you should usually receive a same-day response if you message before 4pm).

Will I get side effects from Foundayo?

Side effects may occur at any point during treatment however, you are more likely to experience side effects at the start of treatment, or at the start of an increased dose. These usually reduce in time. It is important to speak to your clinician if your side effects do not improve, or not manageable or worsen.

How long do Foundayo side effects last?

Common side effects like nausea and constipation can improve as your body gets used to a new dose.

If your symptoms do not improve, are not manageable or worsen, or if you experience rarer or more serious side effects, talk to your doctor, nurse or clinician and they will help determine if Foundayo is still a suitable treatment for you.

The Wegovy tablet is, as its name implies, the pill form of the weight loss treatment Wegovy.

What is the Wegovy tablet?

The Wegovy tablet is the pill form of Wegovy, which is used to assist in weight management. These contain the same active ingredient as Wegovy, semaglutide, and act in the same way to help patients lose weight.

How does the Wegovy tablet work?

The semaglutide in the Wegovy tablet is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means it mimics the effects of the hormone GLP-1, which is normally found in the intestine and released when you eat. It’s used to stimulate insulin secretion and can affect appetite.

By imitating the effects of GLP-1, semaglutide can:

Reduce your appetite and reduce ‘food noise’

Slow how long it takes for food to leave the stomach (increasing how long you feel full)

Increase insulin secretion when blood sugar levels are high

Overall, this encourages you to eat less. This could help you lose weight combined with healthy changes to your lifestyle like a reduced-calorie diet and increasing the amount of regular exercise you do.

How long does the Wegovy tablet take to work?

Wegovy can start to affect your appetite and cravings within the first few weeks. It can take longer for noticeable effects on weight loss, though this can be helped by the healthy lifestyle changes mentioned in the section above.

Who can take the Wegovy tablet?

As a prescription-only medicine (POM) you would only be able to be prescribed Wegovy pill if it’s suitable for you (as determined by a clinician). It is not an appropriate treatment for everyone.

Wegovy is discouraged if:

You suffer from severe digestive problems like gastroparesis

You are allergic to semaglutide

You are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding

How do you take Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets should be taken:

Once a day

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach

At least 30 minutes before you eat / drink / take any other medication

Swallowed whole with a small sip of water

New patients will start on the lowest dose of the treatment and increase after a 30-day period until they’re on the maximum dose. This is done to gradually allow your body to get used to the medication and reduce the chance of suffering from side effects.

In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking Wegovy 25 mg tablets lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight after 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% with placebo. All patients in the trial followed a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

What are the differences between Wegovy injections and Wegovy tablets?

The main differences between Wegovy as an injection and as a pill are:

How they’re taken

How often they’re taken – the injection weekly, the tablet daily

Available dosage strength

Both forms contain semaglutide, but they are different formulations with different dosing schedules and instructions for use. They should not be swapped, combined or changed without advice from a clinician.

Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill?

Patients using semaglutide injection may be able to switch to semaglutide tablets only where a clinician confirms this is suitable. The timing and starting dose must be decided by the clinician.

For more information, read our article on switching treatments.

Wegovy tablet side effects

Like all medicines, Wegovy tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. Drink enough fluids and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, or if you are unable to keep fluids down. This is especially important if you have kidney problems.

You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting side effects helps provide more information about the safety of this medicine. However, reporting a suspected side effect does not replace seeking medical advice or emergency help.

If you have routine questions about treatment, you can message our clinicians through your account. (messages received before 4pm will usually receive a response the same day).

If it’s outside of service hours or your symptoms are more critical, you can call either 111 or 999 depending on urgency - 111 for urgent but not life threatening action and 999 for emergencies.

Wegovy tablets are subject to additional monitoring, which helps identify new safety information.

Wegovy can be used to help people lose up to 20.7% body weight. 31.2% of patients lost 25% or more of their body weight.

What is Wegovy® (semaglutide)?

Wegovy® is a prescription weight loss injection containing semaglutide, part of a group of medications called a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). These mimic a hormone, normally found in the small intestine, that plays a key role in appetite control and digestion. By targeting the receptors in the body involved in hunger and food intake, Wegovy helps you feel fuller sooner, and stay full for longer.

Wegovy is taken once a week using an injection pen designed to support long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or those who are overweight with related health conditions.

While Wegovy can be highly effective, it’s not a standalone solution. It works best when combined with a reduced-calorie, nutritious diet and regular physical activity.

Used consistently, Wegovy weight loss injections can help reduce cravings, suppress appetite, and support long-term, healthy weight management.

Are Wegovy injections and Wegovy tablets the same?

While currently prescribed as an injection, it has recently been announced that Wegovy will be available in the UK as a daily tablet. Both forms contain semaglutide, but they are different formulations with different dosing schedules and instructions for use. They should not be swapped, combined or changed without advice from a clinician.

The main differences between the two treatments are:

Available dosage strengths

How the treatments are taken

How often each treatment is taken (weekly / daily)

Wegovy tablets may be prescribed as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight management, including weight loss and weight maintenance, in clinically suitable adults.

Who is eligible for Wegovy?

Wegovy is designed to help with weight loss for adults who meet certain health and BMI criteria.

You may be eligible for Wegovy® in the UK if you are:

Obese, with a BMI of 30 or above

Overweight, with a BMI of 27 or above, and you have at least one weight-related health condition, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnea

Wegovy isn't for everyone. You shouldn't use it if you:

Are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

Suffer from severe digestive problems, such as gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying)

Are allergic to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in Wegovy®

Always speak to a healthcare provider before starting Wegovy to make sure it's safe and appropriate for your personal health needs.

How does Wegovy® work?

Wegovy® works by mimicking a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone plays a key role in regulating appetite, food intake, and digestion.

When you take Wegovy® once a week, it activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and digestive system. This helps to:

Suppress appetite, making you feel fuller sooner and for a longer period.

Reduce cravings, so you're less likely to snack or overeat.

Slow down digestion, meaning food stays in your stomach longer. This helps you feel satisfied for a longer period after meals.

These combined effects can lead to a natural reduction in how much you eat, which supports gradual and sustained weight loss over time.

Wegovy® works best when used as part of a healthy lifestyle. Around 85% of users lost at least 5% of their weight after taking Wegovy 2.4mg for 68 weeks, as opposed to 34% who has only made changes to their lifestyle and diet

“Wegovy® is a weekly injection which suppresses your appetite and slows digestion. Combined with a reduced-calorie diet and becoming more physically active, this should help you on your weight-loss journey.” - Dr Bhavini Shah

What receptors does Wegovy® affect?

Wegovy® works by activating GLP-1 receptors throughout the body, particularly in the brain and digestive system.

In the brain, GLP-1 receptors play a key role in controlling your hunger and food intake. When you take semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, it activates these receptors, which sends signals that help you feel less hungry and more satisfied after meals.

In your stomach and intestines, activating the GLP-1 receptors helps slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach, meaning food moves more slowly from your stomach into your intestines. This helps you feel fuller after eating for longer periods.

By targeting these specific GLP-1 pathways, Wegovy supports safe, steady weight loss, especially when used with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

How effective is Wegovy® for weight loss?

When taken as prescribed and combined with healthy lifestyle changes, Wegovy can be a very effective treatment for weight loss. In clinical trials, people who used Wegovy® once a week, and with a healthier diet and more exercise, experienced noticeable and lasting weight loss over time.

Key clinical findings for 2.4mg dose:

Around 85% of people lost more than 5% of their body weight

66% of people lost more than 10% of their body weight

48% of people lost more than 15% of their body weight

30% of people lost more than 20% of their body weight

These results show that Wegovy® doesn't just support short-term changes, it can play a major role in achieving long-term, sustainable weight loss when used consistently and correctly.

Wegovy® vs. other weight loss injections

Wegovy® is one of several weight loss injections available via prescription. Other popular treatments include Mounjaro® and Ozempic®. Even though Ozempic® has the same active ingredient as Wegovy®, it can only be prescribed off-book as it is intended to be used for type-2 diabetes. We’ve highlighted the key differences between the injections below:

How to use Wegovy® injections

Using Wegovy weight loss injections is easy once you get the hang of it. You’ll need to take the injection once a week using a pre-filled pen if you’re on the 0.25mg – 2.4mg doses, so there’s no fussing with measuring, vials, or mixing required.

We have an easy step-by-step guide to show your how to use your Wegovy pen correctly. Follow the steps listed there and remember the following:

Before you inject

Choose a consistent day of the week (e.g. every Monday morning)

Take your pen out of the fridge 30 minutes before use to bring it to room temperature

Wash your hands thoroughly

Where do you inject Wegovy?

You can inject into:

The front of your thigh

Your belly

The upper arm (if someone else is giving you the injection)

After the injection

Rotate your injection site each week to avoid irritation

Keep any unopened pens in the fridge, away from light

If you happen to miss a dose, take it within 5 days or skip it and resume on your schedule on the next day.

If you are on the 7.2mg dose, your pen will be single-use and should be disposed of after injection.

Wegovy® Dosage and Schedule

Wegovy® is taken once a week. The dose starts low and is gradually increased over time, so your body can adjust while keeping side effects to a minimum. This gradual increase is important because it helps your body get used to semaglutide and reduces the chances of feeling nauseous or having digestive issues.. Find out how to know when to increase your dose.

Patients begin with a lower dose and works their way up through the treatment, until they hit the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, as long as they can tolerate it. If needed, the maintenance dose can be increased to 7.2mg. If you are happy with the current rate of weight loss on a specific dose, you can maintain that dose. This can be done with any dose.

What happens if you miss a dose of Wegovy®?

If you miss a Wegovy injection, don't panic. What to do next depends on how long it's been since your last dose:

If your last Wegovy® injection was 5 days ago or shorter
Inject Wegovy® as soon as possible. After that, return to your original dose schedule.

If your last Wegovy® injection was longer than 5 days ago
Skip your missed dose and take your next dose on your regularly scheduled day as usual. Do not take a double dose of Wegovy®. This will not ‘make up’ for the dose you’ve missed – you’re just increasing the likelihood of suffering from side effects like nausea or vomiting. Always follow your treatment plan.

Wegovy® side effects: what to expect

Like any medication, Wegovy® (semaglutide) may cause side effects in some people, especially during the first few weeks or when the dose increases. Most are mild and temporary, but it’s important to know what’s normal and what’s not.

Side effects and dosage

Side effects are more common when increasing your dose (e.g. from 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg). That’s why your treatment plan includes gradual increases, it helps your body adjust. If side effects worsen or don’t settle after a few weeks, speak to your prescriber.

You will not be prescribed a two-pen supply until a clinician has confirmed that it is suitable for you. Whether a two-pen supply is suitable for you will depend on factors including:

Weight

BMI

Any weight-related health conditions

Current treatment and dose

Treatment history

Your clinician will review how long treatment should continue and which dose remains appropriate for you.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro works by mimicking the actions of the hormones normally found in the small intestine (GLP-1 and GIP) and, by doing so, causes insulin to release from your pancreas. This has the following effect on your body:

Suppresses appetite - GLP-1 affects the regulation of appetite

Regulates blood sugar - Glucagon (the hormone that can raise blood sugar) is blocked, helping you to feel fuller for longer

Food leaves your stomach slower - Slows down digestion so you may eat smaller portions

Overall this encourages you to eat less overall, which can help kickstart your weight loss journey (though will be helped alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise).

##accordion-item-start##

What receptors does Mounjaro affect?

Weight loss injections like Wegovy or Ozempic are known as GLP-1 agonists. These mimic the naturally occurring GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone and attaches to its cell receptor to replicate the effects, i.e. effects on blood sugar.

Mounjaro, or to be more specific Tirzepatide (its active ingredient), is a dual receptor agonist. This means it mimics the hormone and affects the receptor for two different hormones – GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). GIP helps to control appetite in the brain.

How effective is Mounjaro for weight loss?

When it comes to weight loss, every person is different. Some people will lose weight faster than others. Mounjaro® can help you lose weight from the first dose alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Clinical trials have shown that on average, patients lost up to 22.5% of their original weight on the highest dose of Mounjaro® (15mg) after 72 weeks. Most adults (91%) can also expect to lose at least 5% of their body weight when using Mounjaro®.

How does Mounjaro compare to other weight loss injections?

Mounjaro® weight loss injections are one of several medicated weight loss options currently available via prescription. Others in the market include Wegovy®, and Saxenda®. But what's the difference between Mounjaro®, Wegovy® and Ozempic®?

All three treatments are weekly injections

Mounjaro® has the active ingredient tirzepatide. Wegovy® and Ozempic® have the active ingredient semaglutide

Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are primarily used for weight loss. Ozempic® is primarily used for blood sugar regulation in type-2 diabetes

All three treatments reduce and regulate appetite

Clinical trials for Mounjaro® resulted in 91% of people losing more than 5% of their body weight, compared to 84% with Wegovy®. Ozempic® has not been tested as a weight loss drug

“Mounjaro® works in a similar way to other available injectable weight loss products, such as Wegovy® and Saxenda®, however, it is more effective.

How to use Mounjaro

Looking at your kwikpen for the first time, you may be wondering “how do I take Mounjaro®?”.

You inject Mounjaro® once a week into your tummy, thigh or upper arm. Read our article or look at our guide below to find out more about how to inject yourself. Your Mounjaro order includes 5 pen needles and 4 alcohol swabs.

You should inject Mounjaro® on the same day every week. You can take it at any time of day. You might want to set a reminder on your phone, so you don’t forget what day you normally take it.

##accordion-start##

##accordion-item-start##

How to inject Mounjaro

Follow the steps below on how to use the Mounjaro® kwikpen:

Wash your hands.

Inspect your pen. Check the expiry date and that the pen contains the right dose. Check the liquid inside is colourless to a slightly yellow tone. Don’t use the pen is the liquid has been frozen, has particles in it, is discoloured or cloudy. Don’t use the medication if the name or dose doesn’t match your prescription. Or if the pen is expired, damaged or the medication has been frozen.

Pull off the grey base cap. This should come off easily.

Wipe the red inner seal with a swab.

Select a new pen needle. Always use a new needle for each injection. Then pull off the paper tab from the outer needle shield.

Push the capped pen needle straight onto the pen. Then twist the pen needle until it’s tight.

Pull off the outer needle cap and keep it. Then pull off the inner needle cap, this can go in the bin.

Slowly turn the knob dose, you’ll hear 2 clicks, and the extended line will be shown in the dose window.

Hold your pen with the needle upwards and tap the cartridge holder gently. Then release some medicine into the air by pushing the dose knob until it stops. Slowly count to 5 while you do this. The 0 icon must be shown in the dose window.

Choose where to inject yourself. Mounjaro® can be injected in your lower stomach, thighs or back of your upper arms. You can use the same area of your body every week but be sure to change your injection site.

Turn the dose knob until it stops and the icon is shown in the dose window. The icon is equal to a full 0.6ml dose.

Press the button at the top of the pen down for up to 10 seconds. You’ll hear a click, this means the injection has started. Listen for a second click this means the injection is complete. You can check your dose has been administered by seeing if the grey plunger at the top end of the pen is visible.

Pull the needle out of your skin, it’s normal to see a drop of medicine on the needle. If you see some blood lightly press the area with cotton wool.

Check that the icon is in the dose window, if it is then you’ve had the full dose. If you don’t see the icon in the dose window reinsert the needle and finish the injection.

Replace the outer needle shield.

Unscrew the capped needle and put it in your sharps bin. Then replace the pen cap.

Saxenda® is an effective weight loss drug which is used to help people with high body mass indexes (BMI). Your BMI is a measure that uses your height and weight to see if you’re a healthy weight, and we'll check this before our clinicians can prescribe this treatment.

With lifestyle changes, around 86% of people who use Saxenda® lose weight.

What is Saxenda®?

Saxenda® is a weight loss drug containing the active ingredient liraglutide. It’s injected into the body each day to help you lose weight. The treatment works best when it’s combined with a reduced calorie diet and increased exercise programme.

How does Saxenda® work?

Simply put, Saxenda® works by making you feel less hungry and fuller when you eat.

Your body produces a hormone known as a glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1), which helps you to naturally regulate your appetite. Liraglutide copies the action of this hormone, by reducing your appetite, which hopefully means you need to eat less, and you lose weight.

Saxenda® effectiveness

Saxenda® has been proven to be a very effective weight loss treatment, with lifestyle changes, as many as 85% of the people taking it losing some weight.

In a clinical study over 56 weeks, where patients received Saxenda® alongside a reduced calorie diet and exercise counselling:

Three in five people lost more than 5% of their body weight (that was an average of 5kg)

One in three people lost more than 10% of their body weight (that was an average of 10kg)

Who can take Saxenda®?

Saxenda® is suitable for people with:

A BMI of 30 and over

A BMI of 27 to 30 and have another weight-related ‘co-morbidity’ (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea)

The drug always works best when paired with a low calorie, balanced diet and increased exercise programme.

Taking Saxenda®

If you’re prescribed Saxenda®, you’ll have to inject yourself with the treatment each day.

The dosing schedule increases throughout the first four weeks, to make sure your body can tolerate the treatment and you don’t experience lots of side effects. This process is called titration.

The Saxenda® dosing schedule is as follows:

Week 1 – 0.6mg injected daily

Week 2 – 1.2mg injected daily

Week 3 – 1.8mg injected daily

Week 4 – 2.4mg injected daily

Week 5 – 3.0mg injected daily

If you can tolerate the 3.0mg dose you will then be kept on this dose for the duration of your time taking the treatment. This is known as the maintenance phase.

After 12 weeks of being on the 3.0mg dose, you'll be asked to check in with your clinician. This is because you’ll only be able to continue with the treatment if you’ve lost a certain amount of weight.
