This makes it harder for an egg to implant.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIncreases the thickness of the mucus at the entrance of the womb. This stops sperm from getting through to fertilise an egg.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mini pill works similarly, but only contains progestogen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhen does the pill start working?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pill can be taken at any point during your menstrual cycle (as long as you’re not pregnant already).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you take the combined pill up to and on your fifth day of your period you’ll be protected from pregnancy straight away. If it’s any other point of your cycle it will take 7 days to take effect. Additional protection will be required to prevent pregnancy (such as condoms).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you use the mini pill on the first day of your period you will also be protected immediately. If it’s more than five days after your period has started, you will have to wait 2 days for it to work and use additional protection to prevent pregnancy such as condoms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“While there are a lot of different options for contraception, there will be one that works for you. Talk to your GP to determine the right treatment.”\u003c\/em\u003e - \u003cstrong\u003eDr Bhavini Shah\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow effective is the contraceptive pill?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAccording to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/contraception\/choosing-contraception\/how-well-it-works-at-preventing-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003eNHS statistics\u003c\/a\u003e the contraceptive pill is 99% effective. However, it should be noted that this is only when treatment is followed correctly (i.e. pill is taken consistently without breaks). If used incorrectly, the effectiveness drops to 91%.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eSide effects of the pill and other types of contraception\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs with any medical treatment, use of contraception can lead to side effects. If it’s not always taken correctly roughly \u003ca rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/contraception\/combined-contraceptive-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e9 out of 100\u003c\/a\u003e women will get pregnant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are vomiting or have severe diarrhoea you may not be protected against pregnancy. If this happens, continue to take the pill as usual but use a condom whilst you're ill. If this continues for more than 24 hours you should follow the same steps as a missed pill. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlease note – you should only start Brevinor if you’re sure you’re not pregnant.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow long after taking Brevinor are you protected?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you start using Brevinor on days 1-5 of your period, you should be protected from pregnancy immediately, provided you don’t have a short or irregular menstrual cycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you start Brevinor after day one and have short\/irregular menstrual cycle you’ll need to use condoms for seven days if you have sex. Your clinician will be able to advise if you need to use extra contraception in the first seven days if you have sex.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eIf you miss your pill\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis depends on when and how many pills are missed. Missing one pill, at any time, does not compromise contraception. Missing two or more pills or starting a new pack late might affect your contraceptive cover.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eUp to 48 hours since your last pill\u003c\/strong\u003e – take your next pill as soon as you remember and continue the rest of the pack as usual. Some women experience irregular bleeding. This side effect is common and usually settles within three months.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may experience spotting or heavier bleeding with which you need to use tampons or pads. Then take 1 inactive pill daily for 7 days – during this week you may have a period. Start taking the active pills the day after the last inactive pill. You should be taking a pill every day, which some women find easier to remember.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eFemodene side effects\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany women do not experience any side effects, however some will. These can include headaches, period pain, breast sensitivity, feeling sick or tummy pain. Rarely, some women develop blood clots. This pill carries a slightly higher risk of blood clots than others. If it’s not always taken correctly roughly 9 out of 100 women will get pregnant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are vomiting or have severe diarrhoea you may not be protected against pregnancy. If this happens, continue to take the pill as usual but use a condom whilst you're ill. If this continues for more than 24 hours you should follow the same steps as a missed pill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlease note – you should only start Femodene if you’re sure you’re not pregnant.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow long after taking Femodene are you protected?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you start using Femodene on days 1-5 of your period, you should be protected from pregnancy immediately, provided you don’t have a short or irregular menstrual cycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you start after day 1 and have short\/irregular menstrual cycle you’ll need to use condoms for 7 days if you have sex. Your clinician will be able to advise if you need to use extra contraception in the first 7 days if you have sex.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eIf you miss taking Femodene\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis depends on when and how many pills are missed. Missing one pill, at any time, does not compromise contraception. Missing two or more pills or starting a new pack late might affect your contraceptive cover.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUp to 48 hours since your last pill – take your next pill as soon as you remember and continue the rest of the pack as usual.
