What is an HIV saliva test?
This confidential laboratory-based HIV saliva test is a convenient way of testing for HIV without having to go to a clinic. You collect your saliva sample at home and then send it to our laboratory for testing.
Is this service totally confidential?
This service is totally confidential. Without your explicit consent, we can not share the test result with your GP or anyone else.
How does this service work?
Register online, provide a delivery address and make payment online with a debit or credit card. When your HIV test arrives simply collect a saliva sample by following the simple instructions and return the sample to our laboratory in the pre-paid pre-addressed packaging provided.
How quickly will I receive my test pack?
Order before 5pm Monday to Friday and we will post your HIV test in that day's first class post. You will not need to sign for the test pack when it arrives. The packaging is discreet and does not say what is inside.
How long does the result take?
HIV test results are normally ready within three working days of your saliva sample reaching the laboratory.
Can this HIV saliva test diagnose HIV?
This saliva test can not diagnose HIV. The saliva test can tell you either a) that there were no signs of HIV in your saliva sample or, b) that the test was 'reactive' and could not rule out the presence of HIV in your saliva.
How do I view a negative HIV test result?
'Negative' results are uploaded into your online patient record so you will need to log back into the website to view your test result. A negative result means that there were no signs of HIV in your saliva sample.
What happens if my test result is 'reactive'?
If your result comes back as 'reactive' we will not upload the result onto the website and instead one of our doctors will call you.
If the test can't rule out HIV, does this mean that I have HIV?
Absolutely not. There are many reasons why the test result could be 'reactive' other than there being signs of HIV infection in your saliva.
Is this saliva test as accurate as a blood test?
No. A blood test is more accurate than this saliva test. But this saliva test nevertheless provides a simple and convenient way for some people to test for HIV.
Who is this test suitable for?
This test is suitable for anyone who is comfortable with the possibility of being told, over the telephone, that the test could not rule out the presence of HIV in your saliva sample.
How long must I wait before taking this test?
This test is unlikely to pick up signs of HIV infection in your saliva if infection occurred in the last three and a half months. This so-called 'window period' is two weeks longer than the typical three month 'window period' for an HIV blood test.
