What is the aim of this service?
This oral contraceptive service aims to make it easier for some women who are already on the pill to obtain a
further supply of the same pill.
Who is this contraceptive service aimed at?
The service is exclusively for women who live in the UK who are aged 18 or over. Our doctors are explicitly not able
to advise women on changing to another oral contraceptive pill or to prescribe a pill that a woman is not already
taking.
How does this online service work?
Simply complete our online questionnaire that asks questions about your general health and the current pill you are
taking. You then need to decide whether you want us to send your medicines in the post using Royal Mail Special Delivery
or whether you would like to pick up your pill from one of around 390 Lloydspharmacy stores throughout the UK. Finally
you need to make payment online using a credit or debit card.
What happens after I complete the questionnaire and make payment?
Our doctors will assess the answers you give and, if appropriate, prescribe a further three month supply of the
contraceptive pill you are currently taking. Depending upon what you decided, we will either post your contraceptive pill
to you or arrange for you to collect it at your selected pharmacy.
Can our doctors prescribe the combined pill and the mini-pill?
Our doctors can prescribe UK-licensed combined pills and mini-pills, including the most used contraceptive pills
Cilest, Microgynon and Yasmin.
Can our doctors offer six month prescriptions?
Yes. We can offer six months prescriptions of the contraceptive pill to women who have already used the service for
a three month supply of the pill.
Can our doctors prescribe the pill on an ongoing basis?
To use this service on an ongoing basis you will need to provide our doctors with recent and actual blood pressure
readings each and every time you request the pill. Your local Lloydspharmacy can measure your blood pressure for
free.
How effective is the oral contraceptive pill?
If you take the contraceptive pill as instructed, it is over 99% effective. This means that if 100 sexually active
women who are otherwise healthy take the pill as instructed for a year, only one of them will fall pregnant.
What other contraceptive options are there apart from the pill?
There are many contraceptive options available to women in the UK. Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) -
such as the coil or patch - tends to be the most effective. Owing to the remote nature of this service we can only
provide the routine oral contraceptive pill. Any women using the contraceptive pill must understand that the pill does
not protect a woman from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
What are the potential side-effects of using the contraceptive pill?
Like any medicine, the contraceptive pill can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or an allergic rash. In addition the
contraceptive pill can - albeit rarely - cause blood clots in the legs or lungs, raised blood pressure and can increase
your risk of breast cancer.
Who should not use our contraceptive service?
You should not use this service if you have been told in the past that you should not take the contraceptive pill.
This medicine should also not be taken by pregnant women. You must not use this service if you have never taken the pill
before. You must not use this service if you are under 18. You must not use this service if you are over 40 and currently
on the combined pill.
Does the contraceptive pill protect me against STIs?
The contraceptive pill does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Because the most common
STIs do not show any symptoms and can cause serious long term health problems if left untreated, it is important that you
consider testing. You can order a urine-based postal
chlamydia and gonorrhoea test through this website.
